Using a thread depth gauge is a lot more accurate than the Lincoln penny test when it comes to determining the health of particular tire.

The tread indicator is first placed somewhere in the tread grooves then the gauge is removed by the barrel so that the probe isn't disturbed. That's when the proper measurement can be taken. This is done in multiple locations around the tire to achieve an average. That is, divide the total by the number of measurements. The numbers will reveal whether or not the tire is good to go or not.

Loss of vehicle control easily could be a tall-tale sign that you need to replace a tire. The initial remedy should be to inflate the tire with air. If it continues to lose air, then there's probably a breach which means the tire is finished.
