Every vehicle needs a properly functioning timing belt to run. This rubber belt synchronizes the movement of the camshaft with the crankshaft so that the valves are moving together at the same rate to keep the engine running. Note that the belt may be a chain in some older vehicles.
Newer vehicles can generally run for about 100,000 miles before the belt needs to be replaced. Older vehicles may need a belt replacement at about the 60,000-mile mark.
Unfortunately, it is challenging to discern when your timing belt may be going out. What usually happens is that the belt suddenly fails, causing the engine to lose power. This is why it is recommended to replace the belt at the recommended interval, rather than wait for it to just go out. A trained mechanic at Napleton's Autowerks of Indiana, Inc. will be able to properly diagnose the problem.
